对老设定的大幅修改让人一头雾水，华丽画面的反面是疲软的叙事，不过很明显庵野秀明这些年也逐渐放下了“故弄玄虚”的故事内核，TV原作中脆弱而别扭的红蓝黑三人组在相互的羁绊和各自的旅途中得到了成长，作为本系列的终结，这个结局也反映了一代老中二人梦醒时分回归社会的现实。
